Interesting things I've learned about DEPRESSION

National Institute of Health, Symptoms of Depression can include:• Loss of pleasure in ordinary activities, including sex• Decreased energy, fatigue, being “slowed down.”• Sleep disturbances (Insomnia, early morning wakening, or oversleeping.)• Eating disturbances (loss of appetite and weight, or weight gain)• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness• Thoughts of death or suicide attempts• Irritability• Excessive crying• Chronic aches and pains that don’t respond to treatment

In the work place, symptoms of depression often may be recognized by:* Decreased productivity*Morale problems*Lack of cooperation*Safety problems, accidents*Absenteeism*Frequent complaints of being tired all the time*Complaints of unexplained aches and pains*Alcohol or drug abuse

Some people may not realize that not only are they stressed and anxious, but they are also depressed.slight depressions are sometimes easy to ignore and distract yourself from.

You are a strong person. You had to see and acknowledge there was a problem. That is one of the strongest things you will ever do.

The kind of depression that most often coexists with anxiety is driven by the anxiety. A large number of people who have suffered with anxiety disorders slowly become depressed to some degree or anther.

One reason, over time the experience of panic, high stress levels, anxiety attacks and lowered self-esteem and self-respect, seems to lead the brain to reduce the amount of serotonin it produces. If the cause of depression (stress and anxiety) is dealt with and allieviated, the result (depression) should be relieved. (info from Midwest Center)

DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS TO LOOK FOR:Changes in appetite, sleep patterns, energy, sexual desire, self-perception, ability to concentrate, in health

Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

DEPRESSION:

(Info from midwest center)

Moods: "Bad Moods" are preventable, or at least fairly easy to repair in a relatively short period of time. Steps: 1.) trace the mood, if can do something about it, do it. If not choose attitude (make it positive). 2.) list positives in your life. 3.) Exercise. 4.) Socialize 5.) Seek humor. 6.) Do something nice for someone. 7.) change your environment 8.) enjoy the arts. 9.) spend time in nature. 10.) speak to yourself as if you were speaking to a beloved friend.

Mild to Moderate Depression: From form of "The blues" to feeling hopeless. Do same as above but talk to your doctor.

Clinical Depression: Depression that is severe, to the point the client loses interest in the outside world, has pronounced and prolonged behavior changes, and at its worse- causes separation from reality. Requires professional treatment. Tell someone. If thoughts of suicide are prevalent and comforting, it is time to find out if mediation is appropriate for the time being.

Suicidal: Client sees no reason to live or evaluates that everyone would be better off without them. Very important you seek professional help. See a doctor immediately. Pause just a moment, is this really the legacy you want to leave behind and be responsible for? What or how will it really affect the ones you leave behind?

Important that you share your feelings with family, friends and your doctor. Consult your doctor if you find depression affects normal daily function. Depression that lasts more than two months can have biological repercussions and medication may be helpful

Depression is like looking through dirty, smudged sunglasses your view is not clear. It is distorted. When depressed you are making decisions based on what you see and what you see is not accurate. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is reach out and ask for help.

Using our knowledge of cause and affect, if we get at the cause (usually with anxiety and stress it is the negative ways in which we think), we can change the affects.
